Call for men to be tested for breast cancer

North West Premier Thandi Modise on Saturday appealed to men to be screened and tested for breast cancer.

"Breast cancer does not only affect women," said Premier Modise, speaking at the province's BRICS Charity Golf Challenge.

In her address to the more than 100 golfers who had turned up for the challenge, held at the Leopard Park Golf Club in Mahikeng, Modise said that research had shown that men who develop a breast lump delay seeing their doctor longer than when compared to a woman with similar symptoms.

"Although male breast cancer is rare, men can develop the disease and should be aware that they should seek care if they develop a breast lump," said the Premier.

The Charity Golf Day, held on the last day of the 2nd Annual North West BRICS Expo International Investment and Tourism Conference, was aimed at raising cancer awareness.

Funds raised during the challenge will benefit the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa), Kgaratlho Home for the Blind and the best performers from destitute families at the Mafikeng Hotel School.
