Knysna faces serious lagoon pollution problem

Business Day says Knysna faces a major pollution threat as E-coli bacteria has been found in its estuary and the town's local authority says it has appointed contractors to rectify the problems that may have been caused by an extended power outage in the town on 3 June 2012.

The E. colli levels in the Knysna Lagoon were way over the limit at 2 419 parts to 100 millilitres of water in one spot and at 1 421/100ml in another, considerably higher than the recommended levels of less than 400/100ml.

Next month Knysna hosts its annual Pick n Pay Oyster Festival that draws thousands of people to the seaside village.
