Primary & Secondary Education Opinion South Africa

Parents, kids and the big question of need for private tuitions

Schools have curriculums which need to be followed with a discipline. The subjects, sports, music and other activities are part of it so that students get to know their interest in a particular field or area better. Somewhere in the whole process, the real essence of understanding the motto of education gets dimmed unintentionally.

To attend to this issue, parents who always want the best education for their children, hire education consultants. With the best of their knowledge, these experts aide parents to find tutors who can guide their kids on the way to their success.

Let us explore some more reasons why and with what expectation parents seek services of tutors in addition to classroom teaching.

Personal fears

More often than not, the competitive environment forces parents to consider providing everything to their kids so that they excel. Also, parents actually fear their child's failure on an academic level as well as on the career front. It leads parents into thinking that if they cannot give their kid enough time to know about their preferences, they should hire someone like a private tutor to address the dearth.

Need for stimulus

Caught in a strictly designed regime of subject and grade, a student sometimes loses the curious or inquisitive streak. The ingredients needed in the making of a creative persona thus becomes prey to a structured time-table of the school. Parents therefore look for individuals who can bring that element of education back for the sake of building a sound foundation for their child. Finding such a person can be difficult but perhaps necessary.

'Grades' management

This one is gross. Often students are under pressure for performance, more when they are in high school. They get themselves involved in so many activities that indirectly impact their results in terms of grades, especially in the subjects that are either considered boring (like history) or difficult (like Maths). In such cases, private tuitions are facilitated just for grade management. Even if the student is not good at a subject at least he shouldn't fail. When done effectively, there are chances of excelling as well.

Special needs

If a parent notices lower performance of their child in school, it might not always be blamed on schools or classroom study. There might be some genuine behavioural problems with the child that they find it difficult to mingle with classmates and teachers, or understand unlike every other kid in the class. Autism has been one of the many such problems that impede the normal growth of personality. Regular coaching is just not enough in such cases.

Dropping attention span

To learn and understand anything, one has to pay attention to any particular subject or a topic, but this has become increasingly difficult due to technological advancements. Attention span has dropped to greater degrees in the last two to three decades, and pupils are most adversely affected by this change. Private coaching can thus address this issue to a great extent while it gets ignored in classroom teaching.

Career oriented focus

More often than not, a child might be serious in a single subject as was the case of Wizard of Maths, Ramanujan. However, just because a child gets promoted in a school only when his grades in all subjects are 'satisfactory' enough, he might lose sight of his long term dream. This could be safely avoided with the help of private tutor. They can guide and keep the child focussed in what he loves most by bringing material and inputs that are otherwise not told in schools.

While there could be more reasons added to the above list, it somehow reflects the general mentality of parents while they look for study aide outside the classroom study. They hope to facilitate the kid with everything they can.

Nothing is more precious than the image of a well defined path to the goals of life, after all!
