GrandWest CSI School Cook-Off winners

Nine Consumer Studies learners from five Western Cape schools recently turned up the heat as they vied for for first place at the GrandWest CSI School Cook-Off.

Participating in the GrandWest CSI School Cook-Off event were Goodwood College, JG Meiring High, Ravensmead High, Sinethemba High and the Batavia School for Skills. The learners were tasked with preparing and serving canapés to attending guests and judges. It was a team representing Goodwood College which took first place in the competition. The team comprised Trudy Rene Barros and Naomi-Leigh Naidoo. In second place were Haaneefah Mia and Nishaan Jackobs from JG Meiring High School, and Kaylin Arendse from Ravensmead High took third place.

The cook-off was the culmination of GrandWest’s Social Economic Development Department’s Consumer Studies upliftment programme which has seen the Consumer Studies classrooms at four of the schools upgraded to ensure healthier teaching and learning environments.

The upgrade project included equipping the classrooms with seven stoves each, as well as crockery, cooking utensils and fridges. Industrial tables and cupboards were installed, while various aesthetic improvements were also made, including fixing the ceilings and repainting the classrooms.

As part of GrandWest’s Consumer Studies upliftment programme, Goodwood College, JG Meiring High, Ravensmead High and Sinethemba High were also part of producing a 72-page recipe book which was launched at the cook-off. Each school has contributed eight recipes to the book and will receive copies to sell as a means to generate necessary funding to sustain the newly upgraded Consumer Studies classrooms.
