FNB Art Joburg launches 2020 fair online

FNB Art Joburg will launch the 13th edition of the fair online from 6 -18 November 2020. The shift in dates has given the team time to curate a collection that will give art lovers access to an experience which captures the best parts of a live showcase while respecting the times.

Building off the success of the newly formatted showcase led by Mandla Sibeko’s vision of curating a smaller and more carefully considered fair in 2019, this year the fair will continue with two sections (the main section and the Gallery LAB) for audiences to enjoy. One of the changes that the Art Joburg team found great success in trailing last year is the launch of the Gallery LAB.

A focus on AR

The Gallery LAB is a space where non-traditional exhibition spaces and models could be celebrated. In an aim to encourage innovation, the call for Gallery LAB applications this year challenged entrants to include ways to incorporate augmented reality into their proposals.

We thought a lot about what we could do in a digital fair that you wouldn’t be able to do in a physical one and designing a completely imagined, augmented reality, viewing experience became an exciting idea. If an artist could create any environment in which to present their work, what would they create? Thus the collaboration with A/R artist Xopher Wallace was born." says Gallery LAB co-curator Nicole Siegenthaler.
The team is working closely Xopher Wallace, an anonymous A/R artist and designer, to build the engaging A/R environments that will bring the work to life for audiences to explore over the course of the fair. These installations will be hosted on Instagram and the online platform itself.

Interactive sessions

The newly imagined FNB Art Joburg 2020 edition will include digital opportunities for enthusiasts to indulge in guided tours of the galleries, panel discussions with artists and curators as well as interactive sessions where they can engage with artists and other attendees – all through technology and social media.

This year’s fair is a celebration of the marriage of technology and art. For those who are missing the novelty of walking through an exhibition space and experiencing art in real life, FNB Art Joburg and Hyde Park Corner have partnered to bring the art to life inside the shopping centre at the centre court. Through a series of augmented Reality placements, art lovers can walk through the shopping centre and bring the fair to life through their cellphones.
