Short & Sweet launch Music Video Awards

Short & Sweet has launched the inaugural Music Video Awards, which give credit to the people behind the lens. The event was held at the Youngblood Gallery on Bree Street, Cape Town, and hosted by Annely Ickua, aka Black Soda.

Covering 11 categories, 200 music videos made between 2009 and October 2014 were submitted. As it was the first awards show, the entrants were given an opportunity to submit music videos up to five years old, so as to include everyone going forward. The videos were then shortlisted by an outstanding international panel.

Each winner received an award specially designed by Argentina-born Alejandra Olivera. An industrial designer, Olivera took up the challenge to create a unique award incorporating every aspect of the Short&Sweet mantra by using the natural resources wood and copper.

One-year contract won

The winner in the Best New Director category, Louis Minnaar - who had to submit three videos - won a one-year contract with Caviar Content London, a production company that aims to empower talent across various film industry platforms.

Submissions for next year's awards show will be opening during Cape Town Music Week in September. All music videos produced by a South African national and that have been created between October 2014 and October 2015 will be eligible for submission.

Currently in its 9th year, Short&Sweet's weekly screenings of short films offer a platform to showcase work from established and undiscovered filmmakers. Showing in eight cities around the world, Short&Sweet's core mission is to inspire, educate and empower.
