The provincial DEDT allocated the financial support as testament of their investment to the growth and development of the local music industry. Their financial support forms a collaborative approach between the department and the eThekwini Municipality whom have offered their support and endorsement to the cause.
The funding will go a long way in establishing the brand of Kumisa and growing in strength and numbers, says Kumisa chairperson Nkosinathi Mshengu. "The local music industry faces several challenges that hinder it from reaching its true potential. Talent and merit abound but growth has been stagnated within the province owing to a lack of opportunities and advocacy of fundamental issues, but this is set to change with an active Kumisa and the generous and continuous support of our stakeholders," said Mshengu.
Kumisa was established as a non-profit, regional music industry organisation created through a partnership between the eThekwini municipality's Durban Film Office, operating under the auspices of the Economic Development Unit, and the provincial DEDT, which aims to support and accelerate the advancement of a financially viable and sustainable music industry within the province.
With financial backing and the support of key stakeholders, Kumisa is set to break new grounds this year through a series of planned events that will promote the aims and objectives of Kumisa, draw people, media and music industry stakeholders, increase Kumisa membership and introduce the Kumisa project team and board members to the broader industry, says Mshengu.
Kumisa plans to utilise the fund to include taking up permanent occupancy at the iconic KZN Music house - home to celebrated KZN artists such as Ernie Smith and Mbongeni Ngema. "KZN Music house is home to great KZN exports that have made a significant impact and contribution to our national music industry. Our goal is to align ourselves with the province's leading artists in promoting Kumisa as a supporter of local music professionals," said Mshengu.
