Kirstenbosch Chamber Music Breakfast Concerts 2009

The Kirstenbosch Tea Room, under the “baton” of Pamela Shippel, with The Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden and generously sponsored by Pick ‘n Pay present their third winter season of the Chamber Music Breakfast Concerts - a popular and unique blend of music and food - from 12 July to 30 August.

Showcasing our extraordinary local talent, each of the eight ensembles offers a programme which is sure to delight classical music lovers.

July 12 - The Beau Soleil Piano Quartet, Piet de Beer (violin), Marina Louw (viola), Sandra Kettle (piano) and Cheryl de Havilland (cello) are teachers from UCT College of Music and the Beau Soleil Music Centre. They will perform piano quartets by Mozart, Turina and Fauré.

July 19 - A “wild card” concert - Moonlight Serenade is something new to the breakfast concerts. Louise Howlett accompanied by Albert Combrink on the piano will present a programmme of songs and Piano Interludes. Well known as soloists, these two accomplished performers have only recently started performing together and bring a fresh new touch to the breakfast concerts.

July 26 - James Grace, well loved Cape Town guitarist again brings his magic to the gardens. He will play a selection of works by Spanish and Latin - American composers and will be joined by distinguished flautist Bridget Rennie - Salonen for a performance of “History of the Tango” by Argentinian composer Piazzolla.

August 2 - Edward Maclean, co-principal cellist in the Cape Philharmonic orchestra and Valda Fuhr on piano will present works by Brahms, Fauré, Paizzolla for cello and piano. Valda Fuhr will treat the audience to Gershwin's three preludes for piano.

August 9 - To celebrate Nationals Women's Day “Trois Femmes” trio will perform music by female composers. Tertia Visser on piano, Anouk Espi on violin and Cheryl de Havilland on cello have selected a programme that features works by Fanny Mendelssohn and Clara Schumann. As well as the trios, each of the performers will play a solo item by a female composer.

August 16 - The Ixopo Piano Duo -Francois du Toit and Franklin Larey two Associate professors from UCT will perform compositions for two pianos by Bach, Mozart, Poulenc and Percy Grainger. This exciting programme for two pianos should not to be missed.

August 23 - Camerata Tinta Barocca, the well known Cape Town string ensemble, directed by Quintin Crida with distinguished clarinetist Matthew Reid will be presenting an all Mozart programme. Mathew will perform Mozart's famous Clarinet concerto and Quintin Crida will be the soloist in the Adagio for violin and strings.

August 30 The Solid Brass Quintet will end the exciting 2009 chamber music season. This popular brass ensemble formed more than 23 years ago by principal players of the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra now features Michael Blake (trumpet), Brent Lacey (trumpet), Peter Amon (French horn), Nicholas Green (trombone) and William Haubrich (Bass Trombone).

The intimacy of these Chamber music recitals is perfectly captured in the ambience of the thatched Lecture Hall in the beautiful garden setting.

Pamela Shippel and her team at The Kirstenbosch Tea Room lay on a feast, (and a glass of bubbly) on the verandah adjoining the hall to enjoy before the music.

A new innovation this year is the introduction of a season ticket. At R960 per person this represents a saving of R20 per concert over the season.

Ticket price is R140 per concert. The ticket includes entry into the garden, the sumptuous buffet breakfast and the chamber music recital.

Breakfast is served from 09h30 to 10h45 and the concert is from 11h00 to 12h00.
