#MusicExchange: Jeri Silverman

Delicate. Raw. Unapologetic. South African-born singer-songwriter Jeri Silverman crafts soul-stirring melodies with a percussive folk-pop edge. Swapping seascapes for the skyscrapers of New York, the concrete sidewalks emboldened her to pick up a guitar and write music.

In late 2018 she returned home to launch her latest album, Dear Life.

Produced by Katie Buchanan in New York, the 12-track record delivers an exquisitely unique blend of folk-pop with electronic soundscapes, captivating vocals and eclectic beats. With influences such as Ani DiFranco, Bjork, Ben Howard and Fleetwood Mac, the album is an ethereal collection of songs that explore the interplay between darkness and light.

The album is a beautiful piece of work and well worth a listen.

I caught up with Jeri earlier in the new year.

When are you happiest?

When I’m outta my head (usually when I’m writing a song or dancing).

What does music mean to you?

Music is how I feel and how I move. It’s emotional, healing and inspiring all at once.

What is the most enjoyable aspect of your work?

Writing – transforming my experiences into song.

What drives you: ego or humility?

Insatiable curiosity. I think a lot of my work is born out of the fight between ego and humility, and how to find a healthy balance.

Any funny moments on stage?

I had been sick just before a gig and literally had to spit my phlegm out on stage in between songs. Perhaps more gross than funny!

What is your most treasured possession?

My Martin guitar.

It’s your round, what are you drinking?

Spicy Margarita.
