Get swinging with Cotton Club Moves at On Broadway

Presented by the talented performers of the InSPIRAtions Dance Company Adele Blank's Cotton Club Moves taps, prances and shimmies it way back in time to an era of sultry flappers, Cool Kats and all things jazz. Named after The Cotton Club which was the happening club in Harlem between the 20's and 40's, Cotton Club Moves sassily captures the mood from that bygone era.

Choreographer and director Adele Blank has created imaginative and fast passed dance scenes that capture the music of the likes of George Gershwin, Cole Porter and Duke Ellington and is expertly brought to life by the eight different dancers who employ tap, ballet, swing and even a little bit of pole dancing to do so. The costumes are exquisite and varied and had me wishing I was born in the 20's if only to be able to wear cute flapper dresses and headbands.

Lucrecia Rodriguez gives voice to the production singing sultry songs including Stormy Weather and Loverman. Some of the dancers also take turns in belting out a tune now and again. For me this was the only real downside of the show and I felt they should rather have stuck to just the dancing. Lucrecia on the other hand does great justice to the show and her rich and smoky voice is perfect for this style of production.

And just when you are fully ensconced in that 20's era, the dancers suddenly mix things up with an imaginative hip hop/jazz finale which eases you back to the present.

Cotton Club moves runs till 5th September 2009 at On Broadway. Tickets cost R85 per person. Dinner is served from 18h30, and the show begins at 20h30. Guests only attending the show need to be seated by 20h00. For bookings please call 021 424 1194 or visit www.onbroadway.co.za.
