Star-crossed lovers @ the Artscape

I'd psyched myself up all week preparing to witness my first opera only to discover it was a ballet I was attending. Pirouettes, pliés and fouetté rond de jambe en tournants were the order of the evening as Latvia's Elza Leimane and Raimond Martinov dazzled the equally glamourous audience with a memorable performance.

It must be terrifically difficult translating any of Shakespeare's plays into dance movements, but they pulled it off quite well. As Ruth said on our way home from the theatre, “The art or beauty of Shakespeare's plays is in the dialogue.” I in turn said, “Yes Ruth, that's quite right.” If you had not seen nor read the tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet, you may find it a tad bit hard to follow. However, the story is a universal one and would be enjoyed by all.

The cast had a riveting stage presence as each performer filled his or her role to the ‘T'. The choreography was exquisite along with the magical costumes that brought the era to life. Leimane and Martinov were great in their individual performances however I did find the part of Romeo come across a bit too feminine. Mercutio's (Manie Irving) role was delightfully playful but more tiresome than dramatic in his endless death.

The cast recieved a standing ovation from some audience members who really apreciated the performance. Those attending the “Evening in Verona” had the opportunity of mingling with the cast as a raffle was drawn and were treated to some delicious Italian cuisine and wine.

It was a pleasant Friday night out in Cape Town as the summer season sets in. Next on our Artscape hit list is Queen It's a Kinda Magic.
