Theatre Review South Africa

2015 in Revue

It's here again. The time of year when we reflect on our achievements over the last 12 months, and lament those items on our to-do lists that we just didn't get around to. Just as I was about to sink into a pool of self-deprecation I accepted an invitation to Stuart Taylor's new comedy show, 2015 in Revue, with the hope of attaining some much-needed comic relief.

Stuart Taylor is known to local audiences for his critically acclaimed stand-up show Learner Husband and as the host of the SABC 3 travel show Going Nowhere Slowly. For 2015 in Revue he teams up with Oscar Petersen, of Joe Barber fame, and Mel Jones, a sassy comedian and former radio personality, and they serve up a humorous review of the year's "highlights, lowlights and no lights"; that last one's directed at you Eskom.

The audience is taken on a throwback of this year's top news stories through a combination of stand-up and short sketches, and a peppering of singing and dancing. We took a look at what trended in social media, including the Marie Claire advertising mishap and the creative memes brought about by #Mugabefalls. We were treated to a hilarious interview with a rhino envious of Cecil the Lion's media popularity, and we cackled at the funniest Daily Voice headlines. We celebrated the first penis transplant being performed at our very own Stellenbosch University, and we called to mind the women that were found this year: Zephany Nurse, Homo Naledi, and even Caitlyn Jenner.

The three performers complement each other well. Taylor is a highly likeable character, able to improvise and interact effortlessly with the audience. Petersen delivers the element of physical comedy with quirky, even endearingly awkward, facial expressions and mannerisms. Jones is playful and unpretentious; her first scene being a backstage glimpse into her dressing room with Jones clad in an unflattering nightgown, hair rollers, and in the process of removing her body hair. Oh, and be prepared for a healthy dose of Cape-flavoured profanity.

If not to find out who was crowned "Douchebag of the Year" and what the comic trio considers the top "2015 Vuils", the show is worth seeing because it makes us look back on the year we've shared and laugh out loud with amusement and sometimes relief. 2015 in Revue provides a colourful Cape Town perspective on topical issues of this year; some of them triumphs and others we can gladly bid "farewell and voetsek".

2015 in Revue will be playing at the Baxter Theatre until 9 January 2016.
Tickets available via Computicket.
