Garden Court goes green

Southern Sun's Garden Court hotels is launching environmentally friendly programmes to reduce its impact on the environment and to ensure that it becomes a green brand.

All Garden Court hotels are now utilising Ozone, a water treatment application. Oxygen found in the air we breathe is O2 or two atoms of oxygen. Scientifically, ozone is O3 - a temporary molecule with three atoms of oxygen. This molecule kills germs, bacteria, fungi, algae, and viruses. It also breaks up pesticides, iron, manganese, sulphides and tannins, hormones and gases such as ethylene. Water treated with ozone keeps fruit and perishables fresh, removing mineral deposits and harmful elements. Through oxidation it also cleans unpleasant odours.

“Ozone was first used commercially in 1893,” said Dirk Maritz, Garden Court brand development chef .“Its success is proven, which is why we have selected this water treatment for our hotels.”

Recycling

Not only are guests assured of safe, treated drinking water - which will also be used in food preparation - the hotel will package the water in handmade sandblasted glass jugs produced locally in Ngwenya using glass recycled from all Garden Court hotels. “This initiative fulfils our objective to reduce, reuse and recycle. Recycling glass enables the group to reduce the use of plastic, recycle valuable materials and foster development and economic growth,” said Neil Bald, operations director.

Another venture involves producing organic fudge made from organic sugar.
