The restaurant, named after the noon gun stationed at the Lion Battery above it, specialises in Cape Malay dishes such as bobotie, and offers various curry dishes. Vegetarians need only ask and a dish to their liking will be provided.
Be warned: this is a Muslim restaurant, so no alcohol is served. But considering how insanely steep the road outside is, this is a very good thing.
The menu has little variety, but what it does offer is well made. It somehow manages to get the love that you can taste in a home-cooked meal into restaurant food. It succeeds in keeping its meals authentic because they are more like family feasts shared with strangers than paid meals — especially on a Friday afternoon, when the owners' family sits down to enjoy its weekly gathering.
The Noon Gun Tea Room gives one a glimpse of a different side of the picture perfect postcard image of the Bo Kaap to the one you usually see. The suburb dates back to the 1760s and is one of the oldest urban residential areas in Cape Town. Visitors to the tea room will experience a more intimate aspect of a part of a city that is known more for its colourful terrace houses and vibrant New Year celebrations.
