Wild's top five places to stay

Editor of Wild magazine, Cameron Ewart-Smith, gives you his pick of exotic places to stay in southern Africa.
Try a houseboat to really get away from it all.
Try a houseboat to really get away from it all.

“The national parks and nature reserves have some amazing places to spend the night - from a luxurious tented camp on top of a Kalahari dune to a restored Victorian homestead,” says Ewart-Smith. “Forget about five-star accommodation - here you have a billion stars twinkling overhead. And there's a range of accommodation to choose from depending on your tastes and budget, so you can lounge about in luxury or stay safari-style.

“It wasn't easy to choose only five options, but stay at any of these out-of-this-world spots and you'll experience a night in nature like few others have.

His top five exotic places to stay are:

  • Houseboat on Langebaan Lagoon, West Coast National Park
  • Tree-top chalet in Harkerville Forest, Knysna National Lake Area
  • Traditional cottages in Die Hel, Swartberg Nature Reserve
  • Swazi beehive huts, Mlilwane Game Reserve
  • Pholela Cave in the Giant's Cup section of the Drakensberg, Cobham Nature Reserve

“Many visitors don't know about the gems hidden away in our protected areas,” says Ewart-Smith. “It's a shame because they're missing out on the great-value-for-money deals the parks offer, as well as a chance to get back to nature.”

For travellers who want to experience total seclusion in the wilds or are after a fancy retreat in the heart of a national park, the Editor's Choice is the ideal shortlist. All the details are in the autumn 2009 issue of Wild, available now from SANParks, CapeNature, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, Msinsi Resorts and Big Game Parks of Swaziland.

The magazine is published for the Wild Card programme by Tip Publishing and appears four times a year.
