Capetonians urged to rally behind Bafana Bafana

With just a day to go before the Orange African Nations Championship (CHAN 2014) opening ceremony and match kick-off between Bafana Bafana and Mozambique, on the 11 January, Capetonians are urged to rally behind the home team as they did for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

"The fan walk will be activated and we are calling on Capetonians to come out in their numbers in support of Bafana Bafana. Let us relive the spirit of the 2010 FIFA World Cup and 'paint' the stadium yellow once again. Put on your football shirts and head down to the Cape Town Stadium armed with your vuvuzelas. The double-header promises great excitement for devoted football fans," said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Tourism, Events and Marketing, Councillor Grant Pascoe.

Gates will open at 12.30pm on Saturday, 11 January, with the opening ceremony scheduled to start at 4pm. The spectacular opening ceremony, themed "Celebrating Africa's Home Champions", will showcase the diversity and beauty of the 16 participating African nations with mass formations and routines on the field, devised by the extraordinary AFCON 2013 ceremonies choreographer, Somizi Mhlongo.

Audiences will enjoy performances from Cape Town-based Jazz musician Jimmy Dludlu, a capella foursome The Soil, Eastern Cape poet and praise singer Zolani Mkhivaand, singer Jessica Mpangeni, while house act, Mi Casa, will reprise their AFCON 2013 Closing Ceremony performance.

The first match

This will be followed by the first match, between Bafana Bafana and Mozambique from 6pm to 7.45pm. The second game between Mali and Nigeria will be played from 9pm to 10.45pm. Ticket holders get access to all this with just one ticket.

Fans are advised to arrive early and make use of public transport and Park-and-Ride facilities where available. Fans are also urged to use this opportunity to experience the Fan Walk. In addition, Mayor De Lille has dubbed Fridays "CHAN Fridays" and has called upon all Capetonians to wear football shirts or team colours for the duration of the tournament.

Phase 2 ticket sales have now begun with a 15% discount available on all tickets from R40 to R200. Tickets are available from Computicket.
