Human Rights Tattoo Project comes to SA

United Cultures for Development (UCD) Network in conjunction with Visual Art Collective Tillburg Cowboys brings Human Rights Tattoo Project to SA.
Human Rights Tattoo Project comes to SA

This project is an art aimed to tattoo the complete Declaration of Universal Human Rights with the full 6773 characters on 6773 human beings around the world. Why? Human Rights begins close to the individual person. With knowing your rights, with accepting no indifference of these rights on any scale; not globally, not nationally, not personally.

The idea of Human Rights Tattoo is simple and understandable for everyone. However, it provokes a challenging question; are you willing to commit yourself to these rights, being remembered by your tattoo daily, and having to tell about your tattoo and Human Rights for the rest of your life? To tattoo the complete text, 6773 individuals are needed to offer a small piece of their skin. The size, or place of the tattoo can be determined by the receiver of the tattoo, but you can't choose the letter itself, it will be the next letter in the text.

All tattoos will be united as a text on the website of the project: www.humanrightstattoo.org where you can read the motivation and reason behind every tattoo.

The idea of Human Rights Project originates from Sander van Bussel - a visual artist, who forms part of the Tilburg CowBoys, in The Netherlands, which is known for their social art projects. The murder of fellow artist Steven 'Nyash' Nygah in Nairobi this year motivated Sander to pursue this idea. The project is set up as a collaboration between Mundial Productions (The Netherlands) and Tilburg CowBoys.

Sander will be travelling with a team of tattoo artists from the Netherlands; who will together with Joburg's local tattoo artists, form part of the programme of Slaghuis Street Event's 10th Anniversary. Slaghuis is a Soweto based company celebrating their 10th Anniversary. The festivities will include Hip-Hop Music, Poetry, Human Rights Tattoo and the Dj's on the one's and two's.
