Gauteng launches Spring to Summer Domestic Tourism Campaign

The main objectives of Gauteng Tourism's Spring to Summer Domestic Tourism Campaign have been announced.

They are:

  • To present and promote the Spring to Summer Joburg and Gauteng lifestyle events in key African markets using events as part of the reason to travel to destination Gauteng;
  • To encourage the people of Gauteng to explore their own backyard and become good hosts;
  • To promote the 30 Reasons to sho'tleft in GeePee drive;
  • To market these events in the region to increase provincial and city's revenue and bed nights; and
  • To use the events to anchor its Visit Gauteng and Stay Another Day drive across these important travel markets.

    Consistent with the Premier's call to position Gauteng as a major role-player in African regional economy regeneration, it has identified shopping both personal and cross-border retail bulk buying together with lifestyle events like music festivals, arts, cuisine and culinary shows, fashion and sporting activities as the main selling properties for destination Gauteng.

    Some of these events are:

  • The Joburg Shopping Festival. 30 October to 2 November at Sandton City Mall and Oriental Plaza. A four-day shopping festival in Sandton City and Oriental Plaza Malls focus on high-end fashion sales in Sandton and bulk retail sales in Plaza organized by GTA in association with Visa, City of Joburg is modelled around the Dubai International Shopping Festival. Shopping as part of the big city urban lifestyle offering is a major drawcard for Joburg and Gauteng in particular.

  • Soweto Derby. Orlando Pirates vs Kaizer Chiefs, 1 November FNB Stadium Soweto. This is one of Africa's biggest football derbies and ranks amongst the best derbies in the world. It is one of the must-do things in GeePee with the experience starting way before match day with rival fans (almost the entire country divided in half) exchanging words and punting for their teams.

  • Soweto Nike Marathon. 2 November, Soweto. This popular marathon completes what is billed as a bumper sporting weekend in Soweto. Expecting to attract way over 50,000 runners, the marathon will enable Gauteng to showcase itself as an inspiration destination physically to over 140,000 participants, counting the football fans and further millions through the television broadcast.

  • Gauteng Sansui Summer Cup. 29 November. This year marks the fourth year of Gauteng's involvement as a partner in this historic event dating back to the birth of Joburg. It is the only fashion, horseracing and musical event that provides a day and night experience with the gates opening at 11am and the last race being at 8pm, while music keeps pumping till 1am the next morning.
