The lecture is sponsored by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and hosted by the Frederik Van Zyl Slabbert Institute for Student Leadership Development at Stellenbosch University (SU).

The aim of the annual lecture is to stimulate debate around topical socio-economic and political issues and to encourage young South Africans to think critically and promote a culture of constructive dialogue. The legacy of a great South African thinker and son of Stellenbosch University, Frederik Van Zyl Slabbert, is honoured through this.

This year's lecture takes place shortly before the 2014 election. 20 years after the establishment of a new political order, there is a renewed focus on what democracy means to us.

Dr Frederik Van Zyl Slabbert, businessman and politician, became involved with politics while studying at SU. This lecture honours the role he played in the founding of a democratic South Africa.

A short panel discussion will follow the lecture. The panellists are Sampie Terreblanche, Professor Emeritus at SU, Dr Christi van der Westhuizen, author and political columnist and Shomane Mathiba, a former chair of the Juridical Student Council and member of the SRC at Stellenbosch University.

The honorary lecture will take place at the Wallenberg Research Centre at STIAS in Marais Street, Stellenbosch on 16 April 2014 at 5:45pm.
