Blade manufacturer is considering SA factory
Reports claim that LM Wind Power is considering opening a factory - its first plant in the southern hemisphere - in South Africa. If LM made the move it would aim at supplying the African market and possibly also Latin America. According to Nirmal Gupta, director for key accounts and strategic positioning at LM, the company had identified two sites in the Western and Eastern Cape provinces and is now in talks with South Africa's Industrial Development Corporation about financing the investment.
LM expects to make a decision by the end of the year.
This follows South African government's tender call for up to 1.85GW of wind power to come online by 2017. The tender is designed to encourage local content and job creation. China's Goldwind and India'S Suzlon have also expressed an interest in establishing a local manufacturing base.
