Pelindaba's leading medical isotope producer
South Africa's nuclear facility at Pelindaba, west of Tshwane, is now the world's leading producer of medical isotopes according to an article published on Business Live.
The South African Nuclear Energy Corporation's (Necsa) facility at Pelindaba houses the Safari-1 reactor that is the largest reactor of its kind in Africa and is used to make the medical isotopes.
The facility produces molybdenum-99, used for medical diagnostics and "dopes" about 20 tons of silicon with phosphorous - to improve its conductivity - every year. Pelindaba also offers a range of analytical services to mines, international laboratories and private companies.
