Scavenging waste-pickers earn R120-a-day
At least 88 000 South Africans are scavenging in dustbins to earn a living by removing recyclable waste from dustbins on the streets and selling these items to waste management companies.
Andrew Martinusen, executive director of the South African Packaging Council, released the figures at a workshop hosted by the Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa.
He says that waste-picking offered jobless people a means to earn a living in an industry that is worth about R10-billion a year and still growing. He says that pickers earn about R120-a-day.
