Squabble over scrap metals duty
Scrap metal dealers are furious with the Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of South Africa (SEIFSA) over its proposed 40% duty on scrap metal exports. SEIFSA wants the duty to protect the local metals industry but local metal producers say they have too little scrap material and are forced to import scrap.
SEIFSA says government support for the duty will help local producers and points out that all scrap metal destined for export is first offered to local manufacturers who have 10 days to buy it before an export permit is granted.
However, the Metal Recyclers' Association says that if the proposal goes ahead thousands of jobs will be lost and the industry will be severely hurt by the duty.
