Dept leads Eastern Cape school-agriculture revival

7thspace Interactive reports that officials from the Eastern Cape Rural Development and Agrarian Reform Department are busy with school-agriculture revival. In a statement, the department said it hopes to renew interest in agricultural science as a career choice for learners.

Rural Development and Agrarian Reform MEC Zoleka Capa said that food-production education and training should start at school level and educators should be equipped with the latest practical developments in the sector in order "to sustain food security in the province."

For the past two weeks, Capa has been visiting the eight Eastern Cape schools she adopted, handing over farming materials including rakes, spades, hoes, water tanks, watering cans, wheelbarrows and seeds, in order to help pupils start their own gardens. Dedicated extension officers from the department will be deployed at provincial schools to help drive the project.

According to 7thspace Interactive, department spokesperson Ayabulela Ngoqo said Capa was adamant that each and every school in the province should get involved in food security as part of the Zero Hunger campaign, which aims to ensure all available land is cultivated. Ngoqo added that the department was also busy engaging pupils and successful high school clubs initiatives, which encourage schools to create their own gardens - and take care of them.
