NU's ag outreach is helping Africa

Africa's population is on track to go from the current 1.1 billion to some 2 billion by 2050. Meeting the food demand will require big increases in food production. Yet, farmers and livestock producers there face big challenges.

African farmers “at all scales of production need access to the inputs required to produce a successful crop - high-yielding seeds, effective fertiliser and sufficient water,” agribusiness firm Cargill notes.

A new report by the Brookings Institute says Africa’s ag producers “need more electricity, more irrigation, and better infrastructure.” The continent’s rural areas can benefit, too, by opening up greater opportunities for women.

The University of Nebraska’s ag-science and natural resources programs, widely respected for their top-quality work, have stepped up their international outreach in recent years.
