Top stakeholders plan new vision for SA mining industry

According to MineWeb, top mining stakeholders, including mining companies, trade unions and government will attend a Mining Lekgotla (meeting) aimed to form consensus on a way forward for the country's key mining-industry.

The South African Chamber of Mines' CEO Bheki Sibiya intends the Lekgotla - to be held at the Gallagher Estate in Midrand on the 5th and 6th of June - to ensure attendees' views, concerns and visions for the mining industry are heard by fellow stakeholders.

Issues that are likely to feature prominently include nationalisation and the subsequent ANC-led recommendations for an increased tax regime. Sibiya said that, due to the strategic nature of the meeting, section 54, which allows the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) to halt mining operations at an entire operating section if need be, would not be discussed specifically but safety as a whole would be part of the dialogue.

The background for a scenario planning exercise at the Lekgotla, Sibiya added, is a recent call from Exxaro CEO, Sipho Nkosi, challenging South Africans to adopt a vision to be one of the top 10 economies in the world by 2030, MineWeb reports.
