Globacom launches another fibre backbone

He noted that Globacom, since coming on board the nation's telecom sector, is reputed for leading changes that avail Nigerians the best in telecommunications. "Owing to Globacom's innovations, Nigerians are able to do a whole range of things including Internet browsing, sending and receiving electronic mails, multimedia messaging, vehicle tracking, mobile banking and accessing Microsoft Outlook, all on their handsets," Olowonihi said.

According to him, this marks the conclusion of the Owerri-Onitsha section of the Glo Optic Fibre cable backbone, which the telco is building across the nation, explaining that its a high advanced information highway that transmits voice and data at the speed of light. "It provides large bandwidth for offices and corporate organisations," he asserted.

Olowonihi pointed out that the launch heralds the second of such commissioning of any fibre optic network in the eastern part of the country. This follows the initial launch of the Onitsha-Awka section a fortnight ago, which underscores Globacom's high regard for the government and people of the eastern region.

He stressed that with the commissioning, the government and people of Imo State and neighbouring towns will witness a revolution in voice and data transfers.

"You now have a much faster transmission of data, voice broadband Internet and multimedia services. This will significantly transform the economy of Imo State and empower its people," he said.

Already, he said, the fibre cable network has covered the entire Lagos-Abeokuta-Ibadan route, Lagos-Ijebuode-Ore-Benin-Sapele-Warri-Kaima (Yenegoa junction) -Port Harcourt route, Port Harcourt-Aba-Owerri-Enugu, Onitsha-Awka route and the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano and Abuja-Minna routes.

In a speech read on his behalf by Commissioner for Information, Chief Chuma Nnaji, Governor of Imo State, Chief Ikedi Ohakim congratulated Globacom for finding it worthy to establish a backbone route of its fibre optic cables in Imo State. Praying for the successful transmission of data and voice on the infrastructure, Ohakim described it as a good omen for the citizens of Imo State because it offers potential for the state to earn some revenue and employment for the people.
