Almost 3m vehicles recalled for airbags

"Four car manufacturers submitted reports to government officials, saying they would recall 731,000 cars in Japan due to airbag problems," a transport ministry official told AFP.
"If exports are included, the number of cars with the same problems will reach a combined 2.92m," the official said.
The four manufacturers are Toyota, Nissan, Honda and Mazda.
A Toyota spokesman said his company intended recalling 1.73m vehicles, made between November 2000 and March 2004 in Japan or abroad, due to a defect in passenger-side airbags.
"This is a global recall that affects all regions where we do business," said a spokesman for Honda, which is recalling 1.135m vehicles, also for a faulty passenger seat airbags.
