Show profile Hide profileThis is after my travels brought me home, to South Africa after almost 4 years of exploring across the oceans.
Armoured with optimism, effort, intelligence and consideration, I felt nothing is impossible and a slogan in my heart that nothing can stop the right attitude from achieving its goal, world, here I come.
My bright eyes and a utopian ideology was very soon, and early enough in my career challenged by the reality that, without thorough academic qualifications, financial backing or support and entering the South African business environment being mainly male dominated, I had to hold on, build harder and heavier and walk faster and bolder than anyone else.
Soon, with academic, social and gender challenges came a revelation; I thought walking through the challenge was going to get me to success, it's not, The success is the manner in which you walk, and keep walking.
Academic; I worked two jobs to study part-time and pay my way, in my mid to late twenties.
Social; One reflects more when travelling alone. Full stop.
Gender; A mindset, the view from the world will always be the same. Writing the best proposal, text doesn't have gender. Presenting the best project, ideas don't have gender. Designing the best campaign, art doesn't have gender.
In this shift I deconstructed and rebuilt my methods and ideas; I opened my own Brand Management Agency and my own Creative Studio, and I worked hard.
I attracted people and oragnizations I was earlier most intimidated by. I was invited to boardroom, breakfast and conference tables. I was approached and hunted by some of my idols, the leaders that I admired, were now asking me to look after their reputations, public relations and brands.
I was sitting in boardrooms; in bold buildings I had always only looked at and admired from the outside.
Barely thirty I was standing in the dream, but this was not the place, yet. This was not the final success; this was merely a placement.
I knew I had to keep walking, now, the road wasn't alone anymore.
Academic; I learnt from some of the greatest leaders, experienced innovators, industry evangelists, extraordinaires and thought leaders. I was present in every moment, meeting, session, conference and seminar, sponging up all that I could. By allowing myself to be taught, I learnt.
Social; I built relationships, a portfolio of clients and I made sure every project I take, I add value. I made friends, met mentors and business partners.
Gender; The only limitations are those you pose up on yourself, and if you need an excuse not to achieve you will find one. Humanity; isn't gender specific and serving humanity should form a fundamental component of your walks.
