Show profile Hide profileDr. Cheryl Potgieter has a doctorate in psychology from the University of Western and a Masters in Psychology from the University of Cape Town. Undergraduate degrees are a BA( hons) and a higher diploma in Education.
She believes in continuing education and recently qualified as a life coach. She has spent time as a visiting scholar at the University of Utrecht, Missouri and Yale University.
Previous posts held include Deputy Head of Psychology at the University of Western Cape, Director and Head of the Women's studies Dept. at the University of Western Cape. Full Professor at the University of Pretoria. Founding director and head of the Women and Gender Studies division at the Human Sciences Research Council.
Full Professor in Psychology at the University of Kwa-Zulu- Natal. Institutional Dean of Research at the University of Kwazulu- Natal and Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Kwa-Zulu- Natal.
Previous board memberships include two terms on the SANRAL board. She has published and supervised widely in the areas of psychology, gender, sexuality and higher education.
She says that all her work is underpinned by a commitment to social justice. She has also written policy specifically gender related for government depts. and has consulted to both the private sector and NGOs.
She has served as a commissioner on the Kwazulu Natal commission on Social Cohesion.
She currently serves as one of three commissioners on the Moerane Commision Investigating the Underlying Causes of Political Violence in KZN.
