Germany wins in World Cup sentiment rankings

BERLIN, GERMANY: Alterian's SM2 social media monitoring tool tracks online noise and sentiment across a number of social media and online channels and tracks sources across all countries and languages. The analysis is taken from the opening ceremony right through to the final whistle and tracks noise levels in relation to country internet usage to produce a comparable proportionate figure. Throughout the games, SM2 tracked a total of 1 870 085 conversations online.
Germany wins in World Cup sentiment rankings

Germany displayed the most positive sentiment online (59% of internet conversations) and the least amount of negative feeling (2%). France scored the highest amount of negative feeling, with 28% of conversations registering as negative comment during the tournament.

    Brazil blogs, France forums

The SM2 research also highlights the different platforms through which these online conversations too place. In Brazil blogs are the preferred platform to communicate and share online (52%), whereas in France there is a cultural leaning to in-depth analysis and insight through forums (40%). Noise on Facebook or other social networking sites was very low (highest was 11% of US noise and only 0.2% of UK chatter).

Photo and video sharing sites scored consistently low for World Cup content, being most popular in Italy. Twitter and other microblogs were the most popular platforms through which users shared information, especially in Japan where 87% of World Cup conversations took place on microblogging services. In the UK 41% of Brits talked about the World Cup on twitter. France failed to register on the World Cup micro-blogging scoreboard.

Alterian combines campaign management, web content management, email and social media monitoring tools for marketers.
