A spokesperson for the Canadian government said that Canada was pleased with the pardon and it would help arrange Fahmy's departure from Egypt, reports Reuters.

The three-year long journalist case drew worldwide attention to the Egyptian government's crackdown on dissent, adds News24.

It's a welcome move as the three were sentenced just a few weeks ago, to which SANEF expressed shock and called fr their release as "journalism is not a crime."

We only hope South African President Jacob Zuma heeds the world's positive reaction to this and doesn't follow through on his ominous call pointed out by Anton Harber for a new "patriotism" among journalists - sunshine journalism that hides the reality certainly isn't the answer...
