The three-time European champions issued a statement on their official website telling supporters that they would not be able to bring in any electronic devices measuring more than 150mm x 100mm including laptops and tablet devices such as iPads and iPad minis.

"In line with UK airports we are reacting to the latest security intelligence," said the statement. "These actions are designed to ensure the continued safety and security of all spectators."

United said the scale of the 75,000 seat stadium, dubbed the "Theatre of Dreams", and the club's high profile meant Old Trafford was at special risk.

The northern England football club is looking to rebuild on the pitch following the disappointment of finishing in a dismal seventh spot in the previous domestic season and has appointed Dutchman Louis van Gaal as manager after sacking David Moyes.
