Port of Mossel Bay's admin building gets extension
Construction initially began in September 2015 but stalled due to performance issues with the original contractor. The previous contract was cancelled and TNPA then proceeded with an open tender process to appoint a new contractor, following which, Ruwacon was appointed.
Shadrack Tshikalange, port manager, said the extension was essential as the port has continued to employ more people in line with Transnet’s Market Demand Strategy (MDS), which aims to create jobs and drive economic growth.
“The extension and modifications to the building aim to provide port users with a more public friendly building, more efficient service and improved building access, especially for the physically disadvantaged. It will accommodate 56 staff members once complete,” he said.
“Additionally, we anticipate that 30 jobs will be created as a result from this project and this is significant as it contributes Operation Phakisa’s mandate of job creation.”
The extension entails additional office space to cater for new employees. An entrance foyer, which was not previously part of the administration building, will be added to accommodate clientele. A new glass lift will also be installed in the building to cater for people with physical disabilities.
Tshikalange said port access during construction will be affected. “The road linking SEAVUNA and the Civil Workshop, which passes by the administration building, will have limited access during the project’s duration. People and vehicles entering the Port towards Vincent Jetty and the SEAVUNA area will be required to enter the Port through Gate 1,” he said.
Tshikalange said the management and employees of the Port of Mossel Bay were looking forward to having the building completed by the end of next year.
