Durban's plan to halt problems at container depot
According to Hector Danisa, Durban Container Terminal executive, this system will be used purely for exports but will be expanded to include import by the middle of next year.
A new truck booking system - also due to be introduced next year - will allow containers to be released to the transport companies on an appointment basis that will improve the flow of traffic through the terminal.
Danisa says that 28 new straddle cranes had been bought at a cost of R205-million and four of these have already been commissioned while the other 24 will be operative before the end of the year.
He says that 70 people have been employed to operate the cranes while another 70 are being trained.
