Devco Group establishes affordable housing division

The Devco Group has established an affordable housing division to address the backlog in providing quality affordable homes with a focus on sustainability. The group has launched the Tuscany Views development in Blue Downs, Cape Town, which consists of a total of 85 units with a price range of R500 000 aimed at the affordable market. Of these, 36 were sold and construction commenced early in June 2012.

Devco CEO Deon Winterbach says that although the group is servicing the affordable housing market, it does not mean that these homes will be of low quality. "The buyers in this market demand high quality finishes and durability as much as the higher end consumer, and are becoming environmentally conscious. We're meeting this demand by installing higher quality, durable appliances and finishes in order to affect a savings in annual maintenance."

Decreasing carbon footprint

The appliances include long-life Ecotherm solar geysers, LED lighting systems and using alternative building methods such as lightweight concrete construction and light steel structures, all designed to decrease the construction carbon footprint.
"This allows us to set a new benchmark in affordable housing and to make alternative building methods acceptable and preferable to the buying public," continues Winterbach. "Our aim is to deliver homes with the lowest possible dependability on the Eskom grid, and we're looking at sun and wind energy to augment our solar systems in the near future."

Tuscany Views is funded by Nedbank Corporate Property Finance. Says Manie Annandale, Nedbank's head of Affordable Housing: "Through our financing of this development, we are not only demonstrating our commitment to make housing a reality for many South Africans, but also toward a more sustainable environment."
