Drunk drivers must be suspended

Drunk drivers involved in fatal road accidents should have their licences immediately suspended, North West premier Thandi Modise said on Tuesday (2 April).

"Driver behaviour still accounts for most crashes and road fatalities and should be dealt with more harshly because one death on our road is a death too many," she said in a statement.

She said 16 people were killed in her province over the Easter weekend.

An accident in Ledig, near Sun City, on Monday (1 April) left five people dead. Modise said those killed were between the ages of 21 and 30.

A 35-year-old man appeared in the Mogwase Magistrate's Court on Tuesday on charges of culpable homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol.
