Piper to drive Ferrari at Kyalami 9-hour Revival

David Piper will return to the Kyalami for November's 9-hour Revival meeting with the very Ferrari 250LM he drove to victory in the 1964 Kyalami 9-hour race.

The 9-hour Revival organisers have confirmed that Piper has entered the Ferrari for himself and Italian drivers Mario Casoni and Pietro Silva in the 17 November event.

Piper, who took his first classic 9-hour spoils in a Ferrari GTO in 1962, followed that victory up with another GTO win in '63 before that ‘64 250LM victory. The dominant Piper backed that hat trick of success up with another two 9-hour wins – in a Ferrari 330 P in ‘65 and in a 330 P2/3 in 1966.

Piper won his sixth Kyalami 9-hour in a Porsche 917 in 1971 and he is delighted at the prospect of returning to one of his favourite racetrack: “As you know, Kyalami was one of my favourite circuits for obvious reasons,” David noted on confirming his entry. “I will do everything to help make the inaugural Kyalami 9-hour Revival a success...”

Teammate Mario Casoni is another 9-hour and sportscar veteran who shared one of Piper's Porsche 917s in the original 9-hour, while Pietro Silva has a wealth of sportscar, powerboat and historic racing experience. Several other overseas entries are expected, along with significant local support from a burgeoning local historic racing fraternity, all of which should ensure that the 9-hour Revival boasts full fields of the most charismatic cars that ever raced in South Africa.

Open to historic sports, GT and saloon racing cars originally eligible to compete in those classic 9-hour endurance races, the Kyalami 9-hour Revival celebrates one of SA motor sport's greatest legends.

Split into Pre-1966, Pre-‘73 and Post-‘72 classes that will run in a series of mini-endurance races throughout a 9-hour period on Saturday 17 November, fans will be entertained to historic endurance racing of the highest calibre, while off-track activities will also live up to that halcyon 9-hour legend.

A keen entry price of just R25.00 on raceday and tickets are already available from Computicket along with hospitality packages to be had at Kyalami's Trackside Lounges to ensure there's something for everyone.
