Tesla unveils Model 3 - a car for the masses

NEWSWATCH: Tesla's Elon Musk unveiled the new Model 3 electric car, which Musk hopes to be a car for the masses.

During the launch Musk said the reason Tesla exists and make electric cars is "because it's very important to accelerate the transition to sustainable transport."

According to Musk, the car will be one of the safest in the world, and with a price tag of $35,000 it should hopefully deliver. The Model 3 will have at least 215 miles of range, it can go from 0-60 in six seconds and will incorporate autopilot hardware.

Tesla states that the Model 3 has over 115,000 preorders. Like the Model S, there is both rear and all-wheel drive options and there's a 15-inch touchscreen inside (slightly smaller than other models).

According to TechCrunch, Tesla has committed to having double the number of superchargers from 3,600 to 7,200.

The Model 3 offers two storage compartments in the front and rear areas, and can comfortably fit up to five adults.

Although in SA the $35,000 (approximately R516,482) pricetag is out of many consumers' reach, when comparing the price of the Model S and X, which are over $100,000, you can see how Tesla are trying to bring electric cars to the world.

Deliveries will start at the end of 2017.
