Metrobus drivers go on strike

The chairman of the SA Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) at Metrobus in Johannesburg, Phanuel Tshikovha, said Metrobus drivers will embark on an indefinite strike until their acting managing director, Lawrence Maqekoane, is suspended.

In a telephonic interview with SAnews, Tshikovha said: "We are demanding that the acting managing director be suspended with immediate effect and we are calling for a forensic investigation to probe Maqekoane's violation of the Metrobus recruitment policy with his people.

"We are of the view that this man must be suspended for violating our 2011 agreement as well as taking a unilateral decision regarding his so called-behavioural assessment he introduced to recruit new bus drivers and we are prepared to stand by our demands."

Tshikovha said about 650 Metrobus drivers, who are members of Samwu in Johannesburg, are embarking on the strike which started this morning.
