South Africa, you can now tip your Uber driver

Feeling bad about not tipping your Uber driver for making your day? If saying "thanks" is just too cold for you, from today, riders can now give their drivers monetary appreciation through the app.

The feature first hit the United States and Canada in July 2017, but has now been enabled in South Africa some seven months later.

“Over the years, we’ve heard a lot of drivers asking us to roll out an in-app tipping function, so their clients can more easily reward great service and the act of going above and beyond what’s expected,” explained Alon Lits, Uber sub-Saharan Africa’s GM.

The tipping system will also be applicable to UberEats delivery drivers too.

How will tipping work?

The app will suggest a number of values that you can tip your UberEATS or Uber driver, but you can also add a custom amount. And you’re welcome to tip regardless of your mode of payment.

“These options will be made available below the rating and compliments section and will remain completely optional. Payments will be deducted from the rider’s registered credit card or cash paying customers are free to tip an additional amount of their choice,” the company explains in a release.

The entire tip will be given to the driver, and Uber South Africa clarifies that it will not deduct service fees from the tipping transaction. However, drivers are required to opt-in to the tipping system.

“Improving the driving experience has been a key priority for us over the last year. We’re excited to roll out this new feature as a continuation of this effort and make the app work best for over 13,000 drivers in South Africa,” Lits concluded.
