Ndebele calls for rolling stock manufacturers' Metrorail proposals
Transport Minister Sbu Ndebele invited manufacturers of rolling stock to submit proposals to supply more than 7000 coaches to state-owned commuter rail service Metrorail, Business Day reports. After six years of planning, the state has given the go-ahead for the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) to identify a manufacturer that will produce 7224 Metrorail coaches.
"These are modern trains that will be built in South Africa with the aim of revitalising our rail engineering industry [...], promoting local manufacturing, creating an estimated 65000 jobs and developing a new generation of railway workers," Ndebele said. With a fleet with an average age of 36 years and more than 80% of the signalling system being moribund, Business Day says, Metrorail battles to provide safe and reliable train services. The commuter rail company therefore welcomes the fleet renewal programme.
