Carbide plant to build power station
Carbide manufacturing company SA Calcium Carbide (SACC) plans to build its own 8MW co-generation electricity plant at its factory in Newcastle at a cost of R105-million according to Business Day.
SACC is one of Eskom's largest customers as it takes about 3,5MW of electricity to make a ton of calcium carbide used in the desulphurisation of steel and in the production of acetylene, a product that is mostly used for welding.
According to Claudio Siracusano electricity costs account for the bulk of the production costs of calcium carbide and without erecting its own power plant the company will face continued surges in production-related costs.
