PE firm to launch their award winning digital eye test software at ODMA in Australia

Digital Optometry, based in Port Elizabeth, has announced the launch of Spectrum digital eye test software in Australia. A team from the company will be travelling to the annual Optical distributors and manufacturers association of Australia (ODMA) show which takes place from 5-7 August in Sydney.

Portable, green, and a top performer

The Spectrum digital eye test was developed by award-winning optometrists Graham Chrich and Russell Meyer. The software programme is a proud past winner of the African Visionary Awards and now interfaces with over 40 000 patients a month. In addition, Spectrum eye testing software is used by field workers and placed within each optometric university across South Africa. It's portable, it's greener; the graphics are outstanding and it supersedes all available digital optometric tests worldwide.

Professor Rasengane at the University of the Free State had this to say about the software "We've been using Spectrum since 2009; the tests include different VA targets, subjective refraction techniques, colour vision, contrast sensitivity and binocular vision. The VA targets are extensive and range from Snellen, LogMAR to child-friendly pictures and symbols. The fan and block test is also included in the system making it easier for lecturers to teach this. I not only recommend this product for the clinical examination of patients; it is a good clinical teaching tool that each student should be exposed to". Digital Optometry currently offers this software free to any optometric student worldwide.

The company says Spectrum goes where no-one has gone before and that it offers an unprecedented level of interactivity with the patient and allows social workers to take this exceptional diagnostic tool out into rural areas with ease. The additional language capabilities include English, French, German, Xhosa, Afrikaans as well as Mandarin; this facilitates accurate instructions in the patient's own language reducing the communication barrier between patient and practitioner.

Key software characteristics

  • Automatically calibrates based on the viewing distance
  • Includes many optotypes with unlimited chart variations
  • Works in well-lit rooms
  • Can be installed on portable laptops for off-site use.
