Latest tech monitor does away 3D glasses in theatre

New technology has made its way into South Africa in the form of a medical monitor that does away with the need for 3D glasses in operating theatres.

According to Nicolene Voget, product manager at Bidvest Medical, 3D imaging has proven to provide considerable benefits, particularly as surgery becomes less invasive.

In fact, 50 surgeons in Germany were put to the test.

The surgeons had to perform a simulated, routine procedure - sewing up a wound in a model patient's stomach using a needle and thread. With their hands obscured from view, they had to rely on the screen to see what they were doing.

The test showed that even experienced surgeons could benefit from the then-latest 3D devices. The winning doctor, who had worked at the hospital for more than 30 years and had conducted thousands of operations, performed the procedure 15% faster than before, with significantly increased precision.

“The Jusha-D24N is a high-performance medical display, which supports all the main 3D endoscopy cameras and delivers a more authentic stereoscopic impression with a wider view angle. It is ideal for 3D endoscopic surgery as well as surgical microscopic imaging display,” Voget concluded.
