Kuttel has extensive experience in both the international and national fishing industry, which includes running family businesses in Alaska, Namibia and South Africa. Prior to taking over the helm at Oceana, Kuttel was the CEO of Irvin & Johnson until 2009 and was the driving force behind the establishment of the Responsible Fishing Alliance.

He is the second recipient of the award. Last year's recipient was Irishman Sean O'Donoghue, CEO of the Killybegs Fishermens Organisation, and President of the European Association of Producer Organisations.

Oceana employs more than 3,000 people in both South Africa and Namibia, where it is listed on the Namibian Stock Exchange, and has operations in St Helena Bay, Lambert's Bay, Hout Bay, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Walvis Bay.
