#MusicExchange: Lana Crowster

When are you happiest?

I am happiest when I am performing on stage or when I get the opportunity to use my creativity.

What does music mean to you?

To me, music is freedom.

What is the most enjoyable aspect of your work?

I really love interacting with the audience after performances, especially the children. They are always the most honest so it’s always interesting to hear their stories and opinions.

Any funny moments on stage?

There have been so many over the yearsmost recently I played an extremely windy gig where the onstage monitoring was so bad that I had to lay down on the stage, in front of the speaker just to hear myself. The audience loved it!

Which living person do you admire most and why?

Oprah Winfrey - she came from nothing and used her relentless work ethic to establish herself as a media mogul, while maintaining her class and humility.

What is your most treasured possession?

My Roland Juno keyboard.

It’s your round, what are you drinking?

Inveroche Amber Gin & Tonic, please.

Dream gig to do?

I’ve already played my dream gig; CTIJF on the Baseline Stage in 2016. So now, I’d like to get to Glastonbury Festival, Coachella, and whatever international festivals will have me (I have a long list that I’m working to tick off).

What makes you stand out?

Musically, I think my honesty when performing speaks volumes as well as the subject matter of songs. It all stems from truth and honesty and an audience can pick those up very quickly. Physically, it’s definitely my curly hair.

If you were not a musician, what would you do?

I think I would be in music marketing or event logistics. I’d be doing something where I could still flex my creative muscle.

Pick five words to describe yourself?

Confident. Determined. Resilient. Loyal. Kind.

Favourite fashion garment?

Shoes. All of them.

Your greatest achievement?

Graduating from UCT’s College of Music with a degree in jazz vocals and a post-graduate diploma in the same stream.

What do you complain about most often?

Lack of support for local artists or favouritism for certain artists by certain radio stations.

Happiness is?

Achieving the goals I’ve set out for myself, one by one. There are many. Lots of chocolate also equals happiness :).

On stage, I tend to?

On stage, I tend to forget all my inhibitions and focus on having fun. If I’m having a good time, the audience is having a good time and that’s all that matters.

Wishes and dreams for 2018?

Release new music and have it be received and supported by the masses. Increase the bookings and perform all over SA and the world. Invest and grow my empire. Lots of rain for Cape Town.
