The DST/NWU Preclinical Drug Development Platform, supported by the North-West University and The Dept of Science and Technology, is proud to host the Drug Safety Africa 2018 conference and invites any individual in the academic or business environment with an interest in drug safety to register. At the Drug Safety Africa 2018 conference, models, methods, strategies and regulatory approaches to evaluate the preclinical and clinical safety of medicines, will be presented and discussed for the first time in Africa.

Main topics

At this conference, which takes place from 20 to 22 November 2018, on the Potchefstroom campus of the North-West University, the focus of lectures and discussions will be on four main topics: safety pharmacology, toxicology, clinical drug safety and precision medicine. Talks will include contributions from scientists, manufacturers, distributors and regulators involved in drug safety studies, who will discuss mutual new advances as well as challenges.

Conference Programme

Purpose of the conference

The objectives of this conference are:

  1. to create a framework within which African scientists involved in the evaluation of safety pharmacology can meet and work with international experts to develop novel approaches to drug safety studies during the drug development process, and

  2. to establish a forum for interrogating and implementing new developments in safety pharmacology for both developers and regulators of new medicines.
  3. further, to provide a forum for identifying new partnerships and collaborations devoted to finding new, safe drugs to address unmet medical need in Africa and worldwide.
  4. to showcase newly established drug safety pharmacology infrastructure in southern Africa and to make efforts to identify shortcomings in expertise and infrastructure for addressing essential aspects of drug safety.
  5. to discuss career opportunities in drug safety will be discusse with pre- and post-doctoral students.
