Stakeholders pledge $11b for regional road corridors

Stakeholders, including development partners and the private sector in the three African regional economic communities - the East African Community (EAC), Southern African Development Community (SADC), COMESA and Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) have committed to an $11.2b investment in order to improve the infrastructure and trade facilitation through some of Africa's trade corridors.

According to a communiqué issued at the end of the Tripartite and IGAD infrastructure investment conference held in Nairobi, Kenya recently, the investments are expected in the East and Horn of Africa corridors that include, among others, the Northern, Central, Lamu and Djibouti corridors. The development partners and the private sector - said the communiqué - agreed to prioritise actions aimed at supporting the corridors programme.

COMESA secretary-general Sindiso Ngwenya said that transport is a major hindrance to trade between countries. "It costs $1500 to transport a 20 feet container from Japan to Mombasa and $5000 to transport the same container to Burundi, while about 40% of the cost goes to officials at the border points," he explained.
