IMC asked to look at food prices

Cabinet has asked an inter-ministerial committee to make proposals on food pricing in response to fluctuations and feared shortages brought on by the severe drought in the United States.

The committee would, among other things, review the Integrated Food Security Strategy, National Agricultural Marketing Council CEO Ronald Ramabulane told a briefing on Friday on Cabinet's fortnightly meeting.

"The immediate issue is now that this drought in the US, which is probably the worst drought in 30 years, that has impacted drastically on the price of grains and it will impact on the price of meat as well," he told reporters.

"So that is the major concern that we have. We will come back as soon as possible with a review Cabinet can approve."

In a statement, Cabinet said the committee should "urgently discuss proposals on how to proceed and submit immediate, medium and long-term policy proposals".
